Third World to open this years African Festival

JAMAICA / NEW YORK – The Coalition to Preserve Reggae (CPR) Music, Inc has joined forces with the International African Arts Festival (IAAF) to bring roots reggae music back to the main stage of the festival for the 43rd staging of the annual event.

The festival is held at the Commodore Barry Park in Brooklyn, NY, where IAAF staff and volunteers transform the city park into a cultural oasis for the celebration of traditional and contemporary expressions of various aspects of African arts and culture.

Roots reggae music has long been celebrated at the festival but its presence had waned in recent years.

The collaboration was announced at the 45th annual Malcolm X Black Unity Awards Program where newly installed IAAF chairman, Professor Segun Shabaka told the gathering of measures to bolster the management and operations of the festival and expressed his strong belief that working with CPR would help to bring back a very important musical element that had been absent for too long.

In keeping with CPR’s mandate to raise the bar in reggae music and raise the profile of its purveyors, and in line with this year’s festival theme of “to Repair and Remake the World,” the group secured the participation of reggae ambassadors, Third World Band. CPR will also present the CPR Roots Reggae Showcase, featuring talented emerging artistes.

“We are very pleased to be in the position to bring reggae back to the festival with such a well-known roots reggae band and provide emerging artistes with this esteemed platform from which to showcase their talents,” said Carlyle McKetty, president of CPR.

The annual IAAF attracts an estimated 75,000 attendees from around the world.

For the second year running, CPRLive will extend the reach of “Festival” with a live stream from the main stage.

“Last year, CPRLive streamed the entire four days of the festival. It was a huge success and we are delighted that Prof Shabaka and his team see fit to have us back in a broader capacity,” said Sharon Gordon, chairperson for CPR.

The festival takes place on Thursday, July 3 (with reggae music in a special tribute honouring Bunny Rugs, Third World’s former lead vocalist who passed away earlier this year) and continuing through Sunday, July 6 with a wide range of performances, arts, crafts, foods and more.

For more information, visit www.iaafestival.org or log on to CPRLive at www.cprlive.org.

Great reviews on Ziggi Recado’s new album Therapeutic

ziggi recado therapeutic album

Ziggi Recado – formerly known only as Ziggi – is a fascinating artist. His earliest work was heavily inspired by dancehall and hip-hop, and then he moved towards roots reggae, but suddenly turned towards funk and rock. An adventurous approach to say the least, and he didn’t stay long in that genre.

His two EP’s following his funky venture were more or less traditional and well-produced reggae. And he follows this path on his fourth full-length album Therapeutic, produced by acclaimed U.S. production trio Zion I Kings and out on Zion High Records.

Zion I Kings have been very successful over the last couple of years and are responsible for a number of triumphant albums from MidnitePressureCornell Campbell and Lloyd Brown. And Therapeutic is produced according to the same effective and popular recipe – smooth riddims, skanking guitar, infectious hooks and uplifting arrangements.

The highlights are many, especially the slowly pulsating Earl Sixteen and Taranchyla combination Jah Mercy and the Lutan Fyah combination Guide Ova, with its dub effects and tight drum and bass.

Instead of calling the doctor you could do much better with this album. It will rock both body and mind.

Buju say conman posing as his manager in Trinidad

BANTON… currently serving a 10- year sentence in the US on drug-related charges

TRINIDAD – INCARCERATED reggae star Buju Banton is warning concert promoters in Trinidad to be wary of an unscrupulous individual who has been attempting to scam them out of cash under the guise that he is an authorised agent for the artiste.

In a joint press release the Buju Banton Defence Support Committee and his attorney Professor Charles Ogletree warned against anyone handing over money to the unnamed individual.

“A certain individual in Trinidad has approached promoters with the false claim that he is the local agent for renowned reggae musician Buju Banton. He has further sought to swindle monies by stating he is authorised to collect funds for a concert being held for Buju Banton in Trinidad during this year. We wish to warn the public that it is totally untrue. Buju Banton has not given such rights to anyone in Trinidad. Nor is a concert being organised at this time,” the release stated.

The artiste’s interests warned of legal action if the alleged scammer is caught.

“Anyone seeking to do this would suffer legal conse-quences. We urge that you immediately inform the authorities of anyone who solicits monies from you for that purpose,” the release stated.

Buju Banton is currently serving a 10-year sentence on drug-related charges.

He was arrested at his South Florida home in December 2009 and charged with conspiracy to distribute five or more kilogrammes of cocaine.

His arrest came on the heels of a sting operation at a Drug Enforcement Agency-controlled warehouse in Tampa, which also resulted in the arrest of James Mack and Ian Thomas, who were attempting to purchase co-caine from undercover agents.

After two trials he was sentenced in a Tampa, Florida court.

However, Ogletree has filed a second appeal in the 11th US Circuit Court on February 4 claiming his client was denied a fair trial due to juror misconduct.

After Banton was sent to prison, jury foreman Teri Wright told a reporter that she had defied the order of Judge Tim Moody and studied aspects of the Pinkerton Law.

She was then ordered to hand over her computer for forensic perusal by experts hired by Banton.

However, it was discovered that she turned over an old computer and not the one she had used to study the law.

Banton has maintained his innocence and says he was entrapped by the US Government.

He is currently serving his sentence inside the Miami FCI penal facility and is set for a January 2019 release if his appeal is unsuccessful.

Tony Rebel sued in copyright breach case

May 9, 2014
Post Image

TONY REBELReggae artist Tony Rebel

JS – JAMAICA – The Supreme Court has turned down an application by reggae artiste, Tony Rebel, to defend the lawsuit brought against him for breach of copyright.

Justice Kirk Anderson heard the application on Wednesday and held that since the documents were served on Rebel’s attorney, he cannot say he did not have knowledge of a default judgement.

Attorney-at-Law Garth McBean, who is representing Tony Rebel, applied for leave to appeal and it was granted.

Tony Rebel was seeking to have the default judgment set aside so he could defend the lawsuit.

The lawyer who was representing him when the default judgment was entered in 2006, has since died. Tony Rebel is contending that the lawyer did not inform him about the default judgment.

The judge found, however, that the order was served on his then lawyer in 2006. The judge stated that the entertainer must have known about it and did not act promptly.

When the case began in March, it was discovered that as far back as 2006, a default judgment was entered against Tony Rebel because he did not file the relevant documents within the prescribed time ordered by the court.

The lawsuit was brought by musician Wayne Lattibeaudiere, who is claiming Tony Rebel breached his copyright in relation to the composition Going Home which was released under the title La La Bella.
