CANNES, France, Thursday May 25, 2017 – What started out as a fantasy on Twitter has become reality with the news that Barbadian superstar Rihanna and Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o will co-star in a movie directed by Ava DuVernay for Netflix.

According to sources at Entertainment Weekly, the multiple Grammy award-winning singer and the 34-year-old Oscar winner of ‘12 Years A Slave’ fame, will team up for the highly-anticipated project.

Netflix reportedly beat out several other networks to secure the rights to the movie after aggressive negotiations at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Director of ‘Selma’, Ava DuVernay, will helm the production, and Issa Rae, executive producer of Insecure, will write the screenplay.

The project started after a meme of Rihanna and Lupita went viral.

It was a photograph of the pair sitting together on the front row at the Miu Miu fashion show during Paris Fashion Week 2014.

The picture was shared by thousands of fans. One thing led to another and Rihanna and Lupita exchanged tweets saying they’d be on board if the project was picked up.

JAMAICA – The ‘Stage show Boss’, Spice, has returned to the island after an exciting and terrifying time in Paris, France.

present in Paris during the Charlie Hebdo attacks by Muslim extremists, Spice said though the tour was a success, she is happy to be safely back in the island.

“my prayers are continuously with all my fans and friends in France.”

on her return, Spice received the wonderful news that she was nominated for a whopping eight awards at the Youth View Awards.

“I’m the only female in the Favourite Dancehall Artiste of the year category, and that’s an overwhelming feeling. I’ve worked for that, to be up there with the males, who are dominating dancehall,” said Spice.

Nominations

The other categories Spice has been nominated for are: Favourite Local Music Video – So Mi Like It; Favourite Local Artiste of the Year; Hottest Summer Song of the Year – So Mi Like It; Favourite Musical Collaboration with two singles, Only Thing Me Want and Conjugal Visit, featuring Vybz Kartel; Fashion Icon, and, finally, the Young Hot and Hype Female of the Year.

“To have eight nominations this year is truly a success by itself. Whether I win all of them, or not, I’m already a winner, but I know that So Mi Like It was one of the biggest songs last year, so, of course I’m expecting to take home some awards, especially that one,” said Spice.

Fans can continue voting for Spice by texting the category number and her name, (Spice), to 1876-444-4202, or follow her on twitter, at @spiceofficial, for the details on how to vote.

“I have taken the time out of my fully-booked schedule to be in attendance at the awards, and I really can’t wait to see my fans,” said Spice.

JAMAICA – Dancehall superstar Elephant Man is getting a huge buzz with his latest single, Can’t Live Without Woman, featuring Dean Fraser. The song is bombing FM radio into submission, Elephant Man says.

“The response has been great. A 100 times it play on the radio, four times at Hot Monday, response great, feedback great. The idea different, the punchline and chorus excellent, the topic is universal, and musically, it well put it together,” Elephant Man said.

The song samples the popular song, Don’t Mess with My Toot Toot by Sidney Simien, aka Rocking Sidney, with Dean Fraser chiming in on his sax.

Elephant Man is eyeing a summer release for his next album tentatively titled Do The Right Thing, his final album under his VP Records contract.

“We have some boom trackwith producers such as Leftside, Sunshine, Stephen McGregor, Marcus Myrie, so it can shot,” he said.

Elephant Man leaves Jamaica on February 1 for a series of shows in North America and Europe, and returns on February 22.

Asked whether he had been contacted to perform alongside Mariah Carey at the upcoming Jazz and Blues Festival, he said:

“Well, nobody has approached me yet, but more time, they know we work and they work, so they don’t know if I am available. But normally, if she land inna Jamaica, she may make enquiries,” he said.

Elephant Man recorded a single called Got A Thing For You with the songstress a few years ago. The song appeared on the re-released version of Mariah’s Charmbracelet album. – JAMAICAN STAR

No party in Marigot this year for The 2015 Heineken Regatta

January 22, 2015
Post Image

REGATTA 35-edition

MARIGOT–Heineken Regatta Director Michele Korteweg confirmed Wednesday that there will not be a regatta party in Marigot this year, partly because the Collectivité is not able to meet the regatta budget increase required to hold the event and partly for logistical reasons. The traditional Saturday night party will instead be held on Kim Sha Beach.

However, she stressed that the door was not closed to the French side, as the regatta intends to look at different ways to include and promote the French side.

“Logistically it’s a lot easier to be located in one central location, so all starts and finishes will be in Simpson Bay,” she explained. “We got feedback also that moving boats around was not very easy, and if you don’t then you have to rely on taxis and accommodation for the crew, which was difficult, so that was something else we listened to.

“Secondly, for several years now we have handed in proposals to the Collectivité explaining that the costs are significantly higher than the amount they sponsor. The Collectivité paid in the past, but now it has been taken over by the St. Martin Tourism Office since 2011. We’ve explained we can’t continue in this fashion unless they increase their budget because we end up partly financing the party in Marigot.”

Korteweg said the Collectivité’s budget had been approved in December 2014 but she had been told the Collectivité could not help.

“What with everything that happened with budget costs last year there’s no way we can put in any extra money to finance the party on the French side. They did put us in the budget, but only for a certain amount and not the amount we requested to hold the party. And the late feedback didn’t help as we prepared as if we weren’t going. They did say what they could manage, but our plans were already made,” she said.

She said the Tourism Office had offered 30,000 euros, but the request had been for a little more than double that amount.

“It’s sad that we had to make that decision to cancel, but if we had done it and taken the risk without being able to afford it then you don’t have an event anymore. We have to make all sorts of adjustments to the event in order to remain the biggest and best and not blow up financially. We took a big hit in the budget on the Dutch side two months before the event last year, which was very dangerous and we just survived. It’s not getting any easier. We have to cut out all financial risks and this was one of them,” she said.

She said the cancellation in no way would detract from the overall high quality of the regatta. While small businesses accustomed to having stands at the Marigot party will be disappointed, she said they could approach the organisers for the possibility of renting booths on the Dutch side during the regatta. – The Daily Herald

JAMAICA – USA – Since January 2, sound systems selectors in New York, USA have been enthusiastically pitting their talents against each other as they vie for the first annual Octane Cup.

The inaugura Octane Cup, a competition sponsored by high-riding dancehall singjay, I-Octane, in association with King Fargo Entertainment and Sound clash Fridays, is being held inside Club Freeze, Flatbush Avenue, Brooklyn.

The keenly contested event has steadily gained momentum and fans have been taken on an exciting musical journey through reggae, dancehall and pop music. The format of the competition is that eachFriday, three sounds have a play-off which is judged by the guidelines set out by the committee in addition to crowd response.

It continues every FridayuntilJanuary 30,at which time the winning sound will receive the trophy, presented by I-Octane himself.

According to King Fargo, “The Octane Cup ‘tun up’! It’s loud. We have been having a wonderful time celebrating the skills of the selectors as they pull out all the stops to make sure that their time at the turntable is memorable. We have to commend I-Octane for sponsoring this competition and for showing so much interest in the weekly outcomes.”

So far, six sounds have been played – Trendsetters, King Ramsey and Superforce in the first week, and Generationz, One Don and Brimstone Gold last Friday.

“We have three more weeks and nine more sounds, and everybody is on edge,” King Fargo stated.

An upbeat I-Octane said that he was more than happy to sponsor the competition, whose cup is named in his honour. “The sound system is, and has always been, an integral part of the building and shaping of our music, from the days of ska, right up to the present,” the popular artiste stated in a release.

He further said; “So this is Team I-Octane’s way of paying tribute to the sound system. We all grew up listening to the sounds blaring in our ears and ‘rinsing’ out the latest tunes. Every artiste knows the thrill of driving through an area and, just by chance, hearing the sound system playing your own song. So big respect to every selector and sound man and may the best sound win.”

Meanwhile, I-Octane’s team has been busy in the streets promoting two of his latest singles Call Me Overand the Seanizzle-producedWine And Ride that have already showed great potential.

The charmingly provocative video for Call Me Over was premiered recently on influential urban website Vibe, to excellent reviews. Konshens - dh artist

JAMAICA – Tanzanian-born singer, Clara Kahwa, popularly known as CK, has teamed with Konshens for a single called Body of the Year produced by Timothy ‘Quik Keyz’ Kahwa.

Body of the Year isacombination of a sweet and hardcore dancehall vibe. The song explicitly speaks to her sex appeal and highlights that sultry side of this upcoming sensation.

Konshens said, “I chose to work with CK because she’s a good friend of mine and I realised she’s a bad artiste. Her bro is a sick producer. The talent overload, so we had to do something!”

Konshens also helps CK bridge the gap into dancehall with this track, as opposed to her earlier pop, R&B and reggae tracks – aiding her journey to becoming a master of other musical genres.

CK said, “Radio and street disc jocks are giving it support and see its potential, which I’m truly grateful for.” This track is not only gaining support here, but is also gaining traction in Europe, Africa, Canada South America, and the Caribbean.
